Caring teens comfort girl waiting for ride
On Nov. 12, the same night of the shooting at Arundel Mills Mall, my 12-year-old daughter went to Annapolis Mall to see a movie with friends. After the movie, her friends left, leaving her alone at the mall. She called me for a ride and I went right away but was upset that she was left alone. My daughter waited by the food court entrance and noticed two teenage girls leave the mall. A minute later, they returned and asked if her if she needed help. She told them she was waiting for a ride. The girls sat down near her and chatted. They said they really didn't want to go home yet anyway. They mentioned that they had to get up at 5 a.m. for a lacrosse tournament. My daughter wanted to ask who they played for (she plays lacrosse also) but she told me she couldn't ask because she was afraid she would cry if she spoke. When I arrived at the mall, my daughter was standing outside. She hopped in the car and we drove away. There were a lot of people coming and going in the crowd and I did not notice the two girls sitting nearby. I would love to have expressed my gratitude to these two young ladies. They made an astute observation and acted with kindness. LYNDA TISON

Caring teens identified
Note: This space last Sunday featured an item thanking two unidentified teenage girls for astutely comforting a younger girl waiting for a ride. Here is their story.
The two teens who waited with the young girl at the Annapolis Westfield mall were Amanda Mozier of Arundel High School and Emma Lane of Archbishop Spalding High School. They play lacrosse for their schools and both belong to CCLAX, which is one of the top club lacrosse organizations in the county. They were shopping in the mall and also waiting to be picked up. As they walked out of the mall, they saw the young girl standing outside. When they got to the parking lot, they saw some kids who they felt were trouble and decided to make sure the young girl was OK. When they confronted her, she told them she was waiting for her ride and they told her they would wait with her. They both were late getting to their pick-up point, but it was for a good reason.

Congratulations to all CC Laxers!
When determining team placement the coaching staff considered the following criteria: Physical Attributes: agility, speed and endurance
Individual Skills: stick, shooting, dodging, field sense, 1v1 defense
Team Concepts: Demonstrates understanding and performance of team concepts coupled with the ability to work together with teammates on defense, attack and in transition.
Needs of Team: Positional needs and positional suitability, short term/immediate vs. long term/future program needs. Demonstrated Potential for Development: Evidence of desire to get better everyday–putting tools together to improve (fitness, stick skills & attitude).
Winning Attitude: Demonstrates the “will to win”, the desire to compete during practices and games.
Good Attitude and Respectful Behavior: Treats others with respect, exhibits enthusiasm and support of program and teammates. Makes choices that reflect a winning attitude both on and off the field for the assigned team and for CC Lax as a whole. Versatility: Exhibits the ability to play different positions and with different players on the field.
Maturity: Exhibits an ability to adjust to various situations, dealing with adversity and reacting appropriately. Accepts responsibility and is accountable for actions and learning. Takes initiative and is self-directed.
Attendance at Practices and Games: Makes all practices and games a priority – putting teammates first!
Other intangible considerations that affect the dynamics and performance of the Team: Lacrosse is a TEAM sport. When selecting athletes who will compete together as a team, it is difficult to make selection decisions based solely on subjective criteria.
It is the belief of CC Lax that considering the mix of selection criteria listed above, which includes subjective as well as objective measures in evaluation of performance ability, will result in selection of the best athletes who will work together as an effective team and contribute to team success.
Movement from one team to another: In past years we have reserved the right to move athletes up if their commitment and talent warranted a move. This year, we will move athletes down if their commitment is deemed insufficient and/or their talent level fails to increase during the season. We feel that this component has been missing in the past, as sadly some athletes do not commit to their teammates or their own talent at an appropriate level. Please take your placement seriously – work hard to support yourself and your teammates!
We have high expectations for CC Lax athletes:
- Take responsibility for your own development as a player and a team member – eat well & hydrate, sleep appropriately, train and study daily!
- Take responsibility for fulfilling all agreements and commitments– be honest and reliable!
- Demonstrate constant commitment to effort!
- Demonstrate ability to let go of mistakes and get ready for the next opportunity!
- Have Fun!
The 2012 teams are posted on the Teams page.
Again, congratulations to all!
